Define the borrowing need
Borrow only what you need for a clear purpose and repayment plan. A loan may solve a temporary cash need but can make an ongoing budget shortfall worse.
Compare the total repayment
Monthly payment alone can be misleading. A longer term often lowers the monthly bill while increasing total interest. Compare APR or local equivalent, origination fees, penalties, and the total amount payable.
Understand fixed and variable rates
A fixed rate typically stays constant under the contract; a variable rate can change based on specified terms. Confirm whether the payment itself can change and what happens if market rates rise.
Watch for add-on products
Optional insurance or service packages can increase the effective cost. Ask whether each item is required and request a breakdown in writing.
Check affordability
Include existing debts, essentials, irregular expenses, and a buffer for surprises. A lender’s approval does not necessarily mean the payment fits your budget comfortably.
Protect yourself
Verify lender registration and reputation. Avoid offers demanding upfront transfers to release a loan, and never share banking passwords or one-time passcodes.
